Why Don’t I Have 6 Pack Abs?

6packabsI have been asked many times in my 14 years of coaching and teaching by parents and students alike, “why don’t I have 6 pack abs? I do tons of sit ups and crunches but I still can’t see my abs?” My initial response is “what are you eating and drinking?” When they start telling me things like school lunch or McDonalds or Burger King I then stop them and say, “That’s why!”

People always try to justify it by saying they are getting the salad or they are eating grilled chicken or that a DIET pop is ok or Gatorade is a health drink. To them I say, “YOU DON’T REALLY WANT TO SEE YOUR ABS. YOU WANT TO BE RIGHT!” They usually come up with something like, “but I don’t have time to pack my own lunch or to eat anywhere else. I have to eat on the run.” (See my prior statement about being right again!)

The problem with a great deal of people is that it is more important to be right about something than it is to improve their health. This goes for your health and fitness level too and I have been just as guilty as the next person. What you put in your body will be a direct precursor to how you will look and feel. What can you do to change this behavior? Start with your grocery list. Start buying fruits and vegetables and stay away from any boxed or processed anything. Quit buying bread and noodles….you don’t need them, you just like them. End of story.

“But what about my carbs? I have to have carbs or my energy goes bye-bye. That’s why I have a bagel and coffee for breakfast.”

If you eat a steady diet of fruits, vegetables and lean meats and fishes you will be surprised how great you will feel and that that stubborn layer of excess fat around your 6 pack will be melting away. You will be getting plenty of carbohydrates from the fruits and vegetables you are enjoying with every meal. The whole coffee and bagel thing is just bad for you and it will be addressed at another time. (Come prepared for that one….you might be a bit surprised at how bad coffee really is for you.)

There are no shortcuts. There is only work to be done. But so long as you keep working towards what you want, the soon you’ll lose your belly fat and get six pack abs. Read this blog for support, eat healthy and keep up with your workout routines and you’ll get a flat stomach before you know it.

One of the reasons I make sure to tell my patients is that the belly fat is covering them up. Many people do not relaize that they have “six- packs” already. It is just that their body fat levels are high and cover them up.
