As the weekend closes (dangit) I have worked myself half way through “Can We Live 150 Years?” by Mikhail Tombak.
I was steered toward this book while reading a review of the South Beach Diet on Amazon. It was actually mentioned in two or three of the reviews.
Dr. Tombak is a graduate of the Russian State University. He believes we are masters of our own health. Interestingly, although he believes in juicing, salads, colon therapy, etc. He also understands we are human and doesn’t believe we should deny ourselves pleasures of life.
He believes in healthy spine, not being obese (he says 70% of the world’s population is obese, I wonder if the people of Bangladesh, Sudan and India know that?), physical exercise, air (breathing) water, heat and cold therapies, food of course and then mental strength.
This has been interesting so far. I’ll skip the large intestine cleaning for now, but go ahead, someone else try it and come back and report.
Sleeping: Next to breathing and water, sleeping might be the most important thing that we do. Some would say that food should be with water and air, but I could probably go a few weeks without food. I can’t go anywhere without sleep.
They say 6-8 hours of sleep is plenty, and I believe that. Anything less, or more, for me either makes me cranky or makes me cranky.
As a teen I slept a lot, and if there are any teens on this group, don’t neglect your sleep.
As we get older out ability to sleep well lessens. I use melatonin to help me sleep. I tried a benadryl based sleep aide once and bounced off the walls.
One thing Dr. Tomak suggested, and I agree with, is the use of saunas helps us sleep better. It does me anyway.
Curses: As the baseball season winds to an end two of baseball’s most hapless franchises, once again, made me wonder about things unseen.
For the most part I am a science based fellow. I am not a scientist, but I believe in science. Not about everything, but when I get in a wreck or come down with a virus, I know there is a science based discipline that can help me. And so on.
That’s why, after watching the bizarre events unfold at Wrigley Field and then watch the miraculous happen at Yankee Stadium, I think it’s time for Fox Mulder and Dana Sculley to investigate the curses on the Cubs and Red Sox.
Now, I must also admit, that as disappointed as I was to see the Cubs lose, I was happy to see the Yankees take care of the team that took care of the A’s.
And, after some thought, I’d kind of like to see the Fish come through this year.
But, may the best team win.

I found the good doctor’s ideas interesting… didn’t they have those Russians, in the mountains, years ago, documented to be in their 90′s and above??? Black bread and Vodka, I think most of them attributed to their good health. Having crossed the “50″ stripe in my own life… I would be interested in most anything that would create good health and keep me going until 100… especially if I could still get around and be “all there” upstairs.
I could feel sorry for Chicago… they really DO seem like a tragedy, but there is NO MERCY for the Red Sox!!! Next to the Giants, and Royals… I would find it hard to ever root for them. I’ll keep the info in mind… when I have a chance to read more.
Thanks.
I remember, 20+ years ago, National Geographic doing a study of a rural tribe in the Caucusus that ate mostly whole grains and goat products. These people reportedly lived into the 110+ range regularly. Apparently Stalin had missed them. Mikhail Tombak has a US website, and I didn’t save the url. I just typed Mikhail Tombak in my search engine and viola! I think it was the first link listed.
Ah, the Red Sox, I feel the same way. And the Giants! I wonder how this subpeona of Barry Bonds and Jason Giambi, and their involvement with illegal steriods, will unfold. Wouldn’t it be ironic, after all the accusations, that Jose Conseco was telling the truth, and is the most honest man in baseball? I also think Bud Selig knows a lot more than he’s been letting onto also.
